Hello, all!
Since our 2015 spring hawk watch and owl surveys are finished up, it’s time to report our season totals. The owl surveys at Cheboygan State Park occurred from March 18 to May 2 and were conducted by Laura Makielski and Loren Taylor. One hundred and thirty-two Northern Saw-whet Owls, four Barred Owls, and four Long-eared Owls were netted. Eleven of the N. Saw-whet Owls were wearing bands placed on them in previous years at other locations. These locations included Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, Pointe La Barbe (MSRW), New Hampshire, Ontario, and Indiana.
The hawk watch went from March 8 to June 6 with Kevin Georg as our official counter again this year. One of the highlights of the season was having two days of 70+ Golden Eagles moving through The Straits in mid-March with a total of 374 for the season.
Over 50,000 raptors were counted this year.
