After a day off- courtesy of Darrell Lawson- it’s good to be back on the straits looking for waterbirds. Moderate winds from the northwest were whipping across the water throughout the duration of the day, and it took until 10:30 AM for the temperature to start rising from the low thirties. The heat shimmer was also notably intense, which made spotting birds in the afternoon much more difficult. Today marked the first day since April 17th where no Horned Grebes were confirmed, and it took until the sixth hour to get the only pair of loons moving west. Despite showing signs that the spring migration is beginning to slow down, the birds continue to move through as best they can.
