Fall Waterbird Count: Week 4

The count has picked up well, with W/NW winds providing many productive morning flights. Over 100 migrating loons have been observed this week alone! The vast majority of these are Common Loons, but a small number of Red-throated Loons (4) were sighted as well.

An impressive movement of Canada Geese over the Straits occurred on September 14th. The day was relatively calm and over 600 birds were counted passing over in high, distant flocks.

Counts this week also included sightings of White-winged Scoters and a Long-tailed Duck. As temperatures drop quickly over the next few weeks, waterbird diversity is expected to increase. Excitement is growing each week as we get closer to peak fall migration!
