Fall Waterbird Count: Week 6

Although temperatures are dropping, the variety of species migrating through the Straits continues to grow. Red throated Loons are now sighted almost daily!

Scoters have increased quickly in both numbers and diversity.  On a productive day, all three species can now be observed!

Flocks of Redhead observed are growing considerably.  This species will soon begin to stage here in large numbers before the water freezes over.

On October 1st, a group of small Canada Geese passed by McGulpin Point within a larger flock (photo provided). The birds appear to be a smaller subspecies of Canada Goose, possibly parvipes, which breed in northwestern Canada. They are often difficult to distinguish from Cackling Geese.
