Waterbird Count – 5 September

Winds today started out moderate from the west and grew stronger and more northerly as the day progressed. Given the direction, I was suspecting more duck activity and diversity, but the opposite was interestingly the case. Several mergansers and teal were around, but most of the movement I saw was from Red-necked Grebes and Common Loons. Common Loons were flying east over the upper peninsula for the first couple of hours after sunrise, and small groups of Red-necked Grebes were moving through the straits throughout the day.
