The past several days have been foggy and the winds have usually not been in the birds favor, yet some have been able to power through. Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks have become more common recently with small flocks and some lone individuals seen resting on the water, see photos of White-winged Scoters below. Horned Grebes have also become more common and their cousins the Red-necked Grebes are still moving through taking time to rest during the fog.
On Oct 9th there was a dense fog over the water for most of the day severely limiting visibility but greatly increased my ability to hear the birds. Common Loons were heard calling intermittently during the fog and were occasionally seen flying low over the water. Later in the afternoon, a flock of Sandhill Cranes flew over creating a surreal moment with their honking billowing through the fog while remaining unseen.
