(K)night’s Tale

Last night we captured a HY male saw whet with a small stick protruding from its breast. Rather like a medieval Knight who lost a jousting match. The entry wound was completely healed with no signs of infection.

Instead of trying to pull the stick out and re-open the wound, we opted for cutting off the stick off as close to the flesh as possible. This hopefully makes life easier for the bird, removing most of what had to be a serious nuisance. Since the wound is already sealed and healed, we hope that as the stick decays the wound will continue to heal around it.

The photos below show the twig protruding from the breast feathers; a close up of the entry wound with the twig intact; and the same area after the twig was cut off

Good luck little fella!
