Waterbirds Week 2 (Aug 27 – Sep 2)

This week was fairly slow for migration. Calm winds and warm temperatures put a temporary hold on most waterbird movement.

Waterbird diversity will increase as the season progresses. The first Trumpeter (1) and Mute Swans (1) of the season were recorded this week. A handful of White-winged Scoters (3) also made an appearance.

Dabbling duck flights will peak around October. Blue-winged Teal (10), however, are longer distance migrants and are already on the move. An American Black Duck flew past McGulpin Point on August 28th with a group of Mallard.

Shorebirds continue to pass through in small groups. The count has recorded 12 different species, including Black-bellied (2) Plover and Pectoral Sandpiper (3). The 27th was particularly productive, with a flyby group of Hudsonian Godwit (6) and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper (1).

The upcoming week forecasts strong winds and colder weather. This should be favorable for another wave of migrants.
