Waterbirds – Week 8

The final week of the Waterbird count has c Red-headed Woodpeckers are sighted consistently at Graham Point, with 4 in a single tree on May 13th. ome to a close. Duck migration has slowed down considerably this week. Long-tailed Ducks, Common Loons, and White-winged Scoters are still trickling through in small numbers. The first Caspian Terns (3) of the season were recorded this week. 

A pair of Lesser Yellowlegs (2) and a Solitary Sandpiper (1) flew north over McGulpin Point on May 12th. The bulk of shorebird migration will occur from mid-late May. 

As the season ends and waterbirds have moved through the attention now shifts to songbirds. Passerines are moving in force. Warblers are beginning to fill the trees around the Straits with song and flashes of color. A bright red adult male Summer Tanager made a brief appearance at McGulpin Point on May 10th.
