Heading towards the Straits

Red-tailed Hawk Spring migration update

It’s that time of year again when many birds began the arduous journey North in the hopes of returning to their breeding grounds. It is a very exciting time as we are starting to see some of our tagged birds from the spring of 2021 begin their migration. Here is a quick update on what some of them have been up to over the last few weeks.

Rip: Wintered near Frankfort KY. Currently he is near the town of Sterling MI. He has been stopped over there for the last week or so.

Rowan: Wintered outside of Lexington KY. He initiated his Spring migration a little over a week ago and is currently North of Midland, MI.

Trinity/Morpheus/Sam: Our last three Kentucky birds that also wintered outside of or near Lexington. All three of these bird initiated their migration between April 7th and 8th and are all in currently in various spots throughout Indiana (Maps to come shortly for all three).

Patagium/Herald: Since my last update they are both still on their wintering grounds here in MI. We will have to see if they make a jump North and initiate their migrations next week.

Stay tuned for more updates to come as we are just getting started this season and will have plenty more exciting news or share.
