Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch (MSRW) founding member Kathy Bricker will retire from her key role on the Board of the Raptor Watch effective February 1, 2022. Kathy has worked tirelessly with the MSRW since its inception in 2014.
Kathy’s decades long work as a conservationist has left a lasting legacy on northern Michigan, and we’re thankful she brought her passion as a self-taught raptor enthusiast specifically to MSRW. Kathy’s Raving about Raptors presentation has been seen by hundreds and has literally put the Straits area migration on the map. Her ability to fundraise and engage people in MSRW’s mission has resulted in a ten-fold increase in the MSRW budget over the years. And her ‘baby’ – the Raptor Fest – brought birders, scientists, and raptor experts from all over the country to celebrate the spring migration, and share in their knowledge and enthusiasm for these wonderful birds.
“Conservation as a vocation is not for those who aspire to great wealth or fame,” said MSRW Executive Director Scott Davis. “And it certainly isn’t for those who are easily frustrated or are focused on the short-term. Rather, conservation tends to attract people with giant hearts, people who care more about the living world around them than they do themselves – and who are willing to devote most everything they have: time, energy, resources, fame, and fortune – to making the world a better, more sustainable place for those that come after. They also tend to be tireless with an almost pathological inability to say no. And they’re nice. They’re some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”
Kathy will leave a lasting mark that runs through the very heart of MSRW. From its newly organized database, to files of press clippings and announcements; to the ever-widening network of friends, donors, and bird enthusiasts she has touched over the years – her contributions are everywhere. All of us – the staff and Board of MSRW – are incredibly grateful to have been a part of Kathy’s tenure at MSRW and will do our best to follow in her footsteps.
Kathy – thank you for all you’ve done for raptors and for Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch. Your energy, enthusiasm and leadership will be missed.
