Winter Raptor Survey 1/15/26

Ed Pike, Steve Baker and Russ Edmonds completed the second Winter Raptor Survey of the season following the Hawk Migration Association (HMA) protocol. Results of the survey will be submitted to HMA and tabulated with other surveys from around the country. We follow a prescribed route starting in Rudyard, west to the Dryburg area and then east to the Pickford area. The route covers approximately 50 miles and takes several hours to complete. The team spotted 39 raptors: 19 Rough-legged Hawks, 19 Bald Eagles and one Red-tailed Hawk. Although several Snowy Owls were seen in the area before we began our survey, none were located while we completed the route. Among the non-raptors we spotted along the way were Northern Shrike, Pine Grosbeak, Snow Bunting and Sharp-tailed Grouse. We will complete one more survey in February.
